EastEnders fans convinced Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway is lying about his war hero past

The character played by Tony Clay briefly left the show in February to go to Iraq, and much to fans’ delight returned last month – however he appears to be hiding something, including a mystery injury.

During tonight’s episode Mick and Linda Carter threw him a party to welcome him home, and punters in the Vic asked him to share a story from his time in the army.

The lad recalled meeting a child who was playing with friends before a bomb went off, however there appeared to be holes in his story that Robbie was keen to question.

Halfway suddenly said he needed air and walked out to the Square, where Mick came and met him and had an odd exchange about him being a hero.

But things just aren’t adding up for viewers who are convinced Halfway isn’t telling the truth.

One tweeted: “I think Halfway shot himself and he’s gone AWOL when the Army found out.#Eastenders”

Another said: “I think his brother Stuart is key to this riddle. I'm getting mid-level criminal vibes going by the discussion of him #EastEnders”

A third theorised: “Halfway's secret is probably that he didn't return to the Army and that he was blackmailed into doing a robbery for Aidan/or his brother talked him into doing one. #Eastenders”

While a fourth wondered: “What's Halfways secret? What is he lying about? I reckon he didn't save anyone. I think someone died saving him instead. #EastEnders”

Someone else tweeted: “Half way is clearly AWOL #EastEnders”

And another fan joked: “Pretty impressive how Robbie almost cracked that Halfway was being dishonest. Maybe he could work out what happened to Flight MH370 and who the Zodiac Killer is #EastEnders”

Last month The Sun Online revealed that the popular character would be back.

Speaking of his return, Tony said: "I'm really happy and excited to be back on EastEnders and working with such a brilliant cast and crew.

"Halfway is such a lovely role to play and I’m really looking forward to exploring his story further and seeing where it takes us."

The character, played by Tony Clay, joined in January when he accidentally shot family friend Mick Carter during the botched heist.

During his time in The Vic, Halfway quickly fell for Whitney and despite her reservations, she soon realised her feelings for him.

With Halfway called back to duty by the army, the couple have continued their long-distant relationship but what does Halfway's return mean for their future?

It comes after viewers demanded soap bosses bring back Halfway after his heartbreaking exit.

The hapless barman was seen leaving Walford back in February to rejoin the army.
