La La Land reportedly used stunt doubles for a key dance sequence [Lionsgate]
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were lauded for their apparent dancing in the Oscar-winning musical, as aspiring actress and jazz pianist, Mia and Sebastian.
However, a new report claims the stars did not actually perform a major routine in the movie, body doubles did.
A film insider has told the Sun on Sunday that it is not Emma and Ryan seen performing parts of the fantastical dance sequence at Los Angeles’ Griffith Observatory, but in fact two professionals, one of which is said to be Jeff Goldblum’s wife Emilie Livingston.

The planetarium waltz sees Sebastian and Mia become black silhouettes as they dance amongst the stars with “amazing poise.”
‘The sequence where they danced in the clouds was filmed on a platform and was not Ryan and Emma,” a stunt double, claiming to have starred in the film, said.
“Lots of people have been asking what really went on and we have been contacted by the studio, told off for talking and sworn to silence. It’s not fair but they were insistent we shouldn’t tell anyone there were doubles for the dancing.”

Emilie is credited on IMDb as Mia’s stunt double, while former Strictly Come Dancing star and current Dancing With the Stars professional, Artem Chigvintsev, as Ryan’s stunt double.
The Sun claim that Lionsgate denied any stunt doubles were used for Emma and Ryan’s dance sequences, stating that the pair “trained for three months intensively and everything you see is their work.”
La La Land’s choreographer, Mandy Moore – who is also Dancing With the Stars’ performance producer – was personally in charge of Emma and Ryan’s dance training.

“I think that’s why you get the magic you get from Ryan and Emma,” she says, “because we were creating the movements as they trained and those movements became organic to their characters.
“They both worked so hard and I was really impressed by how they showed up every day so full of energy. They seemed to thrive on having this chance to dance and that was beautiful.”
Considering how much the film’s awards season campaign was built around the fact Emma and Ryan performed every song and dance in the film it’s not too surprising to hear that the studio wanted to keep this quiet.
They even shared a behind-the-scenes video of Ryan and Emma performing a waltz that appears at the end of the movie.
La La Land was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won Best Director for Damien Chazelle and Best Actress for Emma Stone.
The film is released on Digital Download May 8 and Blu-ray, Limited Edition Steelbook, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & DVD on May 15
