The Circle is the Harry Potter star’s latest film and sees her take the lead in the dystopian sci-fi story based on Dave Eggers’ book of the same name.
The novel was a critical and commercial success, but sadly the film hasn’t been received in the same way.
The Circle was produced on a budget of $18 million but only took $9 million in its opening weekend at the US box office.

That’s less than How to Be a Latin Lover and the Bollywood sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion which earned, respectively, $12 million and $10 million the same weekend.
One would have expected the film to do better off the back of Emma’s Beauty and the Beast success, as well as big names like Tom Hanks and John Boyega starring in the film, but even critics were not impressed with it.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews aggregator website, The Circle has just a 17% approval rating.

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said, “The Circle feels dull, dated and ripped from yesterday’s headlines. It flatlines while you’re watching it.”
While the Chicago-Sun Times called it “one of the most crashing letdowns of 2017.”
Not every critic hated it though, as The New York Observer described it as “a female-driven story set in a male-dominated industry with Emma Watson presenting a layered performance in a believable American vernacular.”

The Circle follows the story of a young woman – played by 27-year-old Emma – who joins a sinister Internet company which forces its employees and customers to push the boundaries of privacy, surveillance, and freedom.
Patton Oswalt, Karen Gillan, Ellar Coltrane and the late Bill Paxton appear in the film, which has yet to secure a UK release date.
