The film series is set before the Harry Potter films and will portray the Hogwarts headmaster in his youth.
Jude Law, 44, is set to take on the iconic role, previously played by the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.
Discussing the surprise casting, director David Yates said: “Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I’ve long admired and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him.
“I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”

The film will see Dumbledore battle his best friend Grindelward.
It was previously announced that Johnny Depp will be taking on the role of Gellert Grindelward in the franchise, following a brief appearance in the first film.
David Yates said at the time: “The whole principal of casting the movie was go with the best actor.
“Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘Who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’

“In this business, it’s a weird old business. You’re brilliant one week, people are saying odd things the next, you go up and down. But no one takes away your pure talent.
“Johnny Depp is a real artist. He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor.”
Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who made her screenwriting debut with the 2016 film, also discussed Johnny’s role.
“Watching him create a character is fascinating,” she said. “It’s been quite inspiring to me as the writer.

“I feel he’s got quite an interesting approach to creating a character. It’s a privilege to work with someone like that. It’s very similar to the way Eddie [Redmayne] works and moves around and inhabits the character [of Newt]. The physicality is exactly right.”
The author previously revealed that the Fantastic Beasts series will span 19 years in total.

It will end with Grindelward and Dumbledore’s huge battle for the Elder Wand.
“This is something that I knew a lot about when I was writing Potter, but it was pre-history,” she said. “It was hinted at in the Potterverse. Now I get the chance to say what I know.”
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 will be released in the US on November 16, 2018.
