Live TV musicals are becoming a bit of a thing – and now Fox has announced TWO more.
So get those jazz hands out and practise the songs, because A Christmas Story and Rent will be getting the TV treatment.
The 1996 groundbreaking musical Rent – with arguably the best soundtrack ever – follows a group of young creatives and their struggles with sexuality, drugs and of course, paying their rent amid the aids crisis in New York City.
Written by composer Jonathan Larson, who passed away the evening before its Broadway debut, the show has amassed awards galore and is one of the most successful musicals of all time.
Larson’s parents Julie and Al Larson told Deadline: “None of us could have imagined the massive impact that the messages and themes in Rent would have on the theatre community or the world except for Jonathan.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be continuing Jonathan’s legacy and the still-relevant themes of the show in this way.”
The musical is currently on a UK tour starring this year’s Eurovision entry, Lucie Jones. Amazing.
A Christmas Story will air unsurprisingly at the end of the year given the festive title and will get everyone excited for Santa coming to deliver all those toys.
The musical was inspired by the 1983 cult classic film and hit Broadway in 2012 and the live TV adaptation will include a couple of new songs, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The story is set in the 1940s and follows nine-year-old Ralphie and his family on various Christmas holiday-themed adventures.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have written the music for this one, with previous credits including Dogfight, Smash and La La Land.
