The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘s forthcoming sequel has found quite a formidable foe for Lisbeth Salander.
The Crown’s Claire Foy has already landed the role of rogue hacker Lisbeth in The Girl in the Spider’s Web — having inherited it from Rooney Mara — and now we know she’ll be facing off with Claes Bang (via Entertainment Weekly).
The 50-year-old Danish actor most famously played frenzied art museum curator Christian in this year’s Cannes Film Festival favourite, The Square. This will be his English-language breakthrough.
Claire Foy’s casting was announced back in September by director Fede Álvarez, who is taking over the franchise from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director David Fincher.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander,” he said. “Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth.
“I can’t wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its centre.”
Foy not only follows in the footsteps of Rooney Mara but also star of the original Swedish adaptation of author Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, Noomi Rapace.
Both Claire Foy and Claes Bang will be joined in the cast of The Girl in the Spider’s Web by Blade Runner 2049 and Renegades star Sylvia Hoeks.
Adapting the novel will be Steven Knight, of Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises and Taboo fame. The original Spider’s Web novel was penned by David Lagercrantz after the death of Stieg Larsson in 2004.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is currently scheduled to be released on October 19, 2018.
