JJ Abrams is taking over the world. No, scrap that, he’s taking over the Universe. When his production company Bad Robot brought out found footage movie Cloverfield, we thought it might nab a sequel. But we never quite banked on an entire expanded universe.
Now it’s as if no sci-fi writer is safe from Abrams nabbing their script and turning it into a Cloverfield movie. And nor would they want to be.
After the locked room thriller ‘The Cellar’ became 10 Cloverfield Lane, it was clear that the world of Cloverfield was a wide one. Next up is God Particle, written by Oren Uziel and directed by Julius Onah, which has become Cloverfield 3. And here’s how it came about.
Talking to Collider, Uziel explained: “It was a spec that I wrote probably a year or so after Shimmer Lake, so it definitely existed as its own science fiction.”
Shimmer Lake is Uziel’s directorial debut – a crime thriller starring Wyatt Russell and Rainn Wilson.
“After years of, you know how scripts kind of hang around – people like them but for whatever reason they decided to make it, and then suddenly everything fell into place with JJ, Bad Robot, and Paramount.
“I don’t know exactly when it became a Cloverfield movie, but I suspect in this current market where it’s just harder and harder to market an original movie of any kind, a science fiction movie in particular, but I think everyone just knew if it fits – and it does – into that Cloverfield world, it should, and it can only help.”
God Particle, aka Cloverfield 3, stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Bruhl and Ziyi Zhang and follows astronauts on a space station who discover that an experiment has caused Earth to disappear.
How exactly this will fit into the Cloververse is unclear, though Uziel says his script really wasn’t changed that much.
“We rewrote during production, but I’m not sure what it means to be part of the expanded Cloverfield universe, other than knowing what kind of quality and feel you’re gonna get from something that’s coming out of Bad Robot and JJ,” he said.
“As far as specifics, I don’t think there is one specific thread that makes it a Cloverfield movie, I guess.”
He also goes on to say that the Cloververse movies are becoming more like a sort of Twilight Zone-style anthology series, without shared characters or actors, which will help original sci-fi movies to get made and find an audience. Which really can only be a good thing.
“It’s like an anthology for those kinds of movies, and I think if what JJ’s doing is positioning himself a little bit to be the Rod Serling of JJ-type science fiction movies, more power to him,” says Uziel.
We couldn’t agree more.
Cloverfield 3/God Particle is out December 1, 2017.
