James Gunn has confirmed that one character will not be returning to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 after meeting their maker in Vol 2.

During a Facebook live Q&A, Gunn confirmed that Yondu Udonta (the blue chap played by Michael Rooker) will not return for the next movie, as he wanted to demonstrate that there “are stakes” for his noble sacrifice at the end of Vol 2.

“Yondu is dead. I think it’s very important that in these movies, there are stakes within the films,” Gunn said.

“I am not into this old school way of doing things, where you kill characters and you bring them back and then you kill them again and then you bring them back and their deaths mean nothing.”

He added: “It was the hardest choice I’ve ever had to make from a storytelling perspective to have Yondu die. I wrote a bunch of treatments where Yondu did not die.

“There were other endings. He was saved at the last minute after taking the sacrificial stance… and I realised I was being dishonest. That was not what this story was.”

Last month, Michael Rooker revealed that he’d be more than up for doing a prequel about everyone’s favourite space pirate.

Chatting to Digital Spy about the upcoming sequel, Michael said that he’d be happy to work on a prequel focusing on his character’s back story “any time”.

During the Facebook live Q&A, Gunn echoed Rooker’s thoughts: “Yondu is dead. It’s sad. There could be a prequel Yondu film or a flashback or something like that.

“Yondu could exist in the past, but he’s not going to come back to life, so long as I am involved with Marvel. It’s just not going to happen.”

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 is out now in cinemas around the world.
