Amid speculation about when the show will return, the actress revealed that she’s waiting to hear from writer Sally Wainwright about when she can step back into the role of Catherine Cawood.
“I know she wants to do a third series but she’s so busy writing stuff,” the star revealed at the BAFTA TV Awards.
“We’re kind of in a queue. I guess when she feels time is right, we’ll come back and do a third.”
Happy to return to the show, Sarah added: “I looking forward to it, I’m ready to play her again.”

While she waits for the script, Sarah admitted that she wouldn’t be surprised if there were some big changes.
“Interestingly, Sally tends to bring stuff out of left field for you.
“You suspect you know where a character is going and then she’ll sort of completely surprise you.
She added: “You never really get the chance to sit on laurels.”
Despite the urge to play Catherine again, Sarah admitted that she almost quit the show.
Recalling how she felt when filming for the first series began, the star said: “For the first four weeks I kept telling them, I am wrong for this role.

“I couldn’t find a way to feel comfortable.
“I didn’t feel comfortable with the uniform. I thought I’d just be an actor in a uniform.
“I was worried about the accent. I was scared the accent was coming across as too broad. But they told me to trust them and I did.”
Meanwhile, executive producer, Nicola Shindler revealed that viewers may not see the new series of Happy Valley until 2018.

Speaking to the Radio Times, she said: “We are working on a new idea for Sally for BBC1 which will be next year so the earliest Happy Valley would be would be towards the end of 2018 I would suspect.
“She won’t write the [Happy Valley] scripts for some time but Sally’s determined to do it, Sarah’s determined to do it.”
