I’m A Celebrity eating trial uses dead bugs after complaints

I’m A Celebrity: Toff was joined by Rebekah Vardy for the first eating trial of the series [ITV]

Rebekah Vardy and Georgia Toffolo, known as Toff, took on the first eating trial of I’m A Celebrity 2017 during Wednesday’s episode.

I’m A Celebrity fans noticed, though, that the rules had had a shake-up – with fans usually expected to eat live bugs including cockroaches, mealworms and witchetty grub.

Instead of the stars facing the gruesome challenge of digesting a live critter, the bugs used in the latest challenge were dead.

Ant and Dec’s series had faced backlash for years over the eating trials, with many believing it to be too cruel that the bugs be eaten alive.

Now the show may have listened to viewers, with the decision for the latest challenge to feature only dead bugs.

Rebekah and Georgia were seen chomping on critters including dead crickets, a hawkmoth and even a huntsman spider.

Viewers were horrified by the scenes, but took to Twitter to question the clear change in the famous task.

One fan asked: “Are the bugs not usually alive in the eating challenge?”

Another said: “No eating live bugs this year?! No need for my annual gripe about how unnecessary it is?!”

A third tweeted: “Why didn’t they have living alive & kicking insects … let down.”

Many praised the move, admitting their anger over past years that have seen live bugs used in trials.

Ferne McCann was forced to eat a live spider on the show in 2015 – in a scene that sparked mass complaints from fans.

Meanwhile this is Jamie Vardy’s wife’s first trial after she was ruled out the previous one on medical grounds.

Fans asked why Rebekah was exempt, with the reason revealed to be an allergy to shellfish.
