The Incredibles 2 is one of the summer’s most highly rated films as well as one with a feminist undertone.
Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter, who voices the rubberlike Elastigirl, has spoken to Metro about the animation’s feminist message, as we see such powerful female superheroes showing off their strength within the film.
“To see a very powerful woman kicking ass on screen and still retaining her femaleness? People are finding that so thrilling and so fulfilling,” she explained.
“She’s not pretending to be a man. She is a woman. I don’t know if it was part of [director] Brad Bird’s mission to make this a triumphantly feminist message movie but I kind of do feel that’s a by-product.”
The actress was keen to note that Pixar’s latest doesn’t hold a political agenda, but also pointed out the complexities existing on-screen.
“All of us are so full of conflicts. We are all filled with opposites. And great acting always embraces a certain conflict. I think one of the wonderful things about Incredibles 2 is that it has that complexity. It’s full-bodied. This is not a political movie. It is first and foremost a movie about human beings.”
Recently, Digital Spy had the pleasure of chatting to Hunter about one of the film’s behind-the-scenes secrets.
“We all recorded the first movie with Brad, and only with Brad, not with one another, and Brad would play all the other characters and then we would record with him and then he would give us direction,” she said.
“So it was so familiar [returning to the role] and like hanging around with an old friend.”
Incredibles 2 is out now in the US and is released in the UK on July 13. Book tickets here.
