After a period of relative quiet, the X-Men movie franchise is grinding back into gear. Next out the gate will be spin-off New Mutants, but although there’s less than a year before it comes out, the majority of the cast is yet to be announced.
And now it looks like the one actor who has seemingly been on board for over a year might not be in it after all.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit has tweeted that James McAvoy will not be back as Professor X for the movie.
The longstanding rumour that Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams and The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy would star as Wolfsbane and Magik were confirmed over the weekend, although Kit shot down another reported casting.
This said, we’re not quite ready to count McAvoy out just yet.
Taylor-Joy has previously said that she believed he would appear in New Mutants, echoing writer/producer Simon Kinberg. The titular team is also a younger class of X-Men, so if director Josh Boone is planning to stick near to the classic origin, Charles Xavier would feel like an essential part of that story.
Then again, perhaps plans have changed in the run-up to filming the movie.
New Mutants will be released on April 13, 2018, with Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix following later in the year.
