Jimmy Fallon paid a heartbreaking tribute to his late mother Gloria as he returned to The Tonight Show.
Last week, Jimmy announced that his mother had passed away following a brief illness at the age of 68, with all recordings of The Tonight Show cancelled last week and repeat episodes broadcast instead.
Last night (November 13) marked Jimmy’s return and he opened the show by thanking fans of the show for their support over the past week, breaking down as he recalled a sweet memory from his childhood.
“As some of you know, my mother Gloria passed away recently and I cancelled our shows last week to be with my family and make arrangements. She was the best audience, she was the one I was always trying to make laugh and she was such a fan of the show and everything I did,” he explained.
“When we were little, my mom would walk us to the store, me and my sister, and we would hold hands. She would squeeze my hand three times and say, ‘I love you’ and I would squeeze back, ‘I love you too’. Last week, I was in the hospital and I grabbed her hand and I squeezed, ‘I love you’. I just knew we were in trouble.”
He concluded: “Thank you for watching, thank you for helping me and my family recover from this loss. Mom, I’ll never stop trying to make you laugh. I love you.”
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs weeknights on NBC in the US.
