The Absolutely Fabulous star was asked whether she thought the black British actor would make a good choice to play James Bond.
Joanna, 71, who appeared briefly in the 1969 007 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, tld the Radio Times that Idris did not “fit the description.”
“Idris Elba is stunning – and was incidentally in Absolutely Fabulous – but I don’t think he is right for Bond, who is quite clearly described in the book,” she said.

“I’m colour-blind when it comes to acting, but Idris Elba is just a zonking great star anyway.”
Many people have shared their disappointment over Lumley’s comments, considering how many characters in literature have gone through a radical change for the the big screen.
As Guy Pewsey of the Evening Standard points out, Morgan Freeman’s character in Shawshank Redemption Red, was originally a white Irish man while Holly Golightly, played by Audrey Hepburn, was meant to be more blonde and sexy.
Many fans have tweeted their upset at Joanna’s suggestion.
While others have jumped to her defence.
Last month, Idris was linked to the role thanks to John Ridley, the writer behind Sky Atlantic’s new series Guerrilla.
‘It was a pleasure, he’s a gentleman,” John said of working with Elba. “I can’t wait to see him as James Bond quite frankly.”
Idris was quick to shut down claims: “Oh my god, I have no idea why he said that. That’s another six months of the rumour, oh well.”
