Lily James has revealed she cried when she first met Meryl Streep on the set of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
The British actress is playing the younger version of Streep’s character Donna Sheridan in the sequel, which hits cinemas in July.
Speaking to PorterEdit about her first encounter with Streep, James said: “[Meryl] was singing this song in a chapel and it was so emotional. I was sat outside knowing I was about to meet her. And crying. And it was like: hold it together, Lily! It was too much!”
But after meeting the three-time Oscar winner, James was immediately put at ease.
“[Meryl] was just so cool. We had to do this dance together and she gave it all to me, she let me take my moment,” she said.
In the sequel, Donna’s daughter Sophie Sheridan is now pregnant and decides to find out more about her mother’s past in order to help her better handle her pregnancy.
For James, taking on the role of the young Donna was daunting.
“Oh, God. [It was] terrifying. I tried not to focus on the Meryl Streep-ness of it all, but tried to focus on the Donna Sheridan-ness of it all,” James said.
“Having said that, I did go through all of Meryl’s movies, especially stuff from when she was younger. I loved watching Postcards from the Edge – there’s a spunky kind of madness where she sings in that – and even Death Becomes Her.”

Back in December, fans of the original film were left upset and confused when Streep was left out of the first trailer.
Her absence led to speculation that Donna is now dead, as the characters only referred to her in the past tense.
Another trailer dropped in January and did little to ease fans’ fears, as Streep was barely present and had no lines.
But with no definitive answer on the fate of Donna, we’ll just have to find out the old-fashioned way — by watching the movie.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is due for release in US cinemas on July 20, 2018 and UK cinemas on July 27, 2018.
