The “This Is Us” star dishes on what went wrong with famous exes Wilmer Valderrama, Zach Braff, Andy Roddick and ex-husband Ryan Adams.
While Mandy Moore is no stranger to flashbacks on "This Is Us," Howard Stern had the TV star looking back at her own dating history during an incredibly candid interview on his SirusXM show Wednesday morning.
During the hour-long conversation, the actress/singer reflected on her relationships with famous exes including Wilmer Valderrama, Zach Braff, AAndy Roddick and Ryan Adams, to whom she was married from 2009-2016. She also commented on her current engagement to Dawes musician Taylor Goldsmith and how he’s different from her past loves.
Stern dove head first into the relationship talk by bringing up how Valderrama bragged about how he "snatched" her virginity during a 2006 interview on his show. At the time, he said sex with Moore was "really good," but not like "warm apple pie." When Howard asked about his comments, Moore made it clear "he did not" take her virginity.
"I dated him when I was 16-17, no," she responded. "I love him and I still love him and he’s a very good friend and that’s why I was so shocked by it. Not only was it a fib, but it was so unlike him, so uncharacteristic. He’s dated all the ladies. I met him at a photoshoot for some teen magazine when I was 15. Never French kissed a boy, he was like my first true boyfriend."
She also said she was hurt to hear his comments and specifically remembered hearing from her parents after the interview. "They were bummed," she said, "Don Moore, my dad, especially was like, ‘What? I liked that young man.’"
"I remember in the moment he tried to explain it away that he did get caught up and maybe insinuated more than outright said it and I said, ‘No, you outright said it,’" she added. "I was like, ‘Why would you ever talk about that with anybody and lie about it?’ We don’t talk about it now. I moved past it now. This is like 2005. We’re not that close, but we’re friendly. We have some mutual friends. He came to my house a couple months ago, he had some friends over. He’s a good guy, he really is."
The talk then turned to Braff, who she dated in the mid-2000s. When Stern asked whether she thought he "was the guy for life," she said, "I did. You’re like, this is it, I know who I am, what I want. I knew nothing, in reality." She added they’re still in touch.
Moore also addressed her relationship with tennis pro Roddick. "He broke my heart, Howard," she admitted. "I was a kid, he was a kid. I started dating him when I was 18. We met in Toronto, I was doing a movie and somehow he and another tennis buddy of his came to visit me on set. I met him that way."
When asked if Roddick broke up with her, she responded, "He broke my heart, so I think we parted ways because of that. It got poured into a record that eventually became an album that came out 3-4 years after that. It was that heartbreak, then dating Zach and that heartbreak. It equals productivity." Of some of her past relationships, she added, "They get a wandering eye. It’s human nature, part of the human condition. You’re onto the next! It’s OK, wasn’t meant to be."
While she hasn’t talked to Andy "in years," she has no ill will towards him. "He’s moved on, he’s like married with kids and he seems super happy and I’m happy for him," she explained. "We were kids. I don’t care. 10 years ago, I would have had an axe to grind, but now I’m like whatever."
Moore then touched on her first marriage to musician Ryan Adams, which ended in a "devastating" divorce.
"It didn’t sour my idea of romance or marriage or monogamy. I just chose the wrong person," she said. When Stern said she should have done a Braff with Adams and just done "two years in and out," Moore joked, "Maybe less!"
Though she denied Adams cheated on her, she explained, "We’re just different, we were not meant to be. It was a very lonely life. Someone who’s obsessed with themselves and obsessed with their work and wasn’t able to be a partner or husband. The anger subsided for me now. I have so much distance from it now, I have a different perspective."
She added that new fiance Taylor Goldsmith "couldn’t be more diametrically opposite" of her ex. "Life is good, I feel very lucky," she added. Moore also said she’s "ready" for kids, but will have to time it out with her "This Is Us" shooting schedule. "I jump around in time, so it would be weird playing an older lady with a pregnant belly," she joked.
On a totally unrelated, but hilarious, note, she was also asked about the lyrics to her breakout hit song, "Candy." Moore had no explanation for some of the puzzling words. "What does it mean to miss someone like candy?" she asked. "What the f-ck does that mean? Even as a kid I was like, ‘I don’t know what I’m singing about.’"
