Warning: This article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2…
Microsoft weren’t happy that one of their Zunes made an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 – even though product placement is usually a good thing.
In the film, Ego The Living Planet (Kurt Russell) is seen squishing Peter Quill’s Sony Walkman and destroying it (along with one of the mix-tapes his mother gave him)…
But by the end of the film, Kraglin has given a Microsoft Zune to Peter (Chris Pratt), which the deceased – and never returning – Yondu got for him.
Obviously, the Zune wasn’t a big hit in the world of technology – and James Gunn has now revealed during a Facebook Q&A that he reached out to Microsoft about referencing their tech.
Unfortunately, the company said it wasn’t best pleased about its precious Zune being used in a disparaging manner – namely, the joke that the Zune is the latest state-of-the-art tech that earthlings currently use.
Still, Gunn did explain that the Zune actually brings the characters together in the end…
“Peter Quill almost ignores Baby Groot throughout the entire movie. This is important. I think that Peter Quill is, in many ways, a complete absent father to this son that they have onboard.

“At the end of the film, Peter Quill gets this Zune from Yondu, and he sits down to play it,” Gunn continued.
“And as he starts to listen to the music, instead of it being a moment that is selfish, Baby Groot crawls into his lap, and as we see Peter Quill looking down at Baby Groot, we see a father’s love for his son.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is out now in cinemas around the world.
