Saved By The Bell star Tiffani Thiessen is returning to her teen sitcom roots as Netflix sets out to make its first big contribution to the genre.
Yep, that’s right, Kelly Kapowski is coming back to our (streaming) TV screens.

Instead of playing a perky cheerleader, this time around Thiessen will be playing a determined and protective mother in Netflix’s new multi-camera comedy Alexa & Katie, according to Deadline.
The new series stars Mighty Med‘s Paris Berelc as Alexa and newcomer Isabel May as Katie, two lifelong best friends who are about to start their freshman year of high school, and who find themselves having to confront a crisis that leaves them feeling like outsiders when what seems to matter most is fitting in.
Alexa & Katie, created by Heather Wordham, already has a 13-episode, straight-to-series order. Producer Matthew Carlson, who’s best known for his work on Malcolm in the Middle and The Wonder Years, will serve as showrunner.
Alexa & Katie is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2018, so there’s still a while to wait before we see what it has to offer, but if Netflix boss Reed Hastings gets his way, the show should be willing to take a few risks.
“We’ve cancelled very few shows,” he said recently. “I’m always pushing the content team. We have to take more risks – you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”
The Get Down became the first Netflix original series to be cancelled after one season earlier this year – an exclusive group we’re sure Alexa & Katie isn’t hoping to join anytime soon.
