New Girl was seriously close to being cancelled before it got renewed for a seventh and final season.
Deadline reports that Fox was considering axing the sitcom because most of the main cast would not be able to return to work until later this year for various reasons, putting its scheduling in doubt and making the broadcaster lean towards ending it.
However, series creator Liz Meriwether made a last-minute pitch for a final season that saved New Girl from the chop and added a twist to its return.
It appears that season seven will feature a time jump, picking up three years after the season six finale which saw a host of happy endings for all the main characters.
And once the stars’ deals were renegotiated as a result of the shortened final season of only eight episodes, New Girl was officially saved on Sunday (May 14).
Apparently the last run will feature major milestones for all the main characters over the space of one year, including a big one in the series finale (we’re putting a bet on now that it will involve Zooey Deschanel’s Jess marrying Jake Johnson’s Nick).
It means that executive producer Brett Baer will get to explore his ideas for season seven that he outlined last month.
“I think that it’d be really, really fun – the way that it was fun to see Schmidt as a bridezilla – to see Schmidt as a helicopter daddy for his child and see what he’s like as a father,” he teased.
New Girl airs on Fox in the US and E4 in the UK.
