The Power Rangers movie bombs in China – is a sequel in jeopardy?

“No-one can ever take them down” goes the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers theme tune, but it looks like a disastrous gross in China might spell the end of Lionsgate’s big-screen reboot of the franchise.

Forbes reports that Saban’s Power Rangers (as the marketing calls it) only managed to scrape $1.2 million at the Chinese box office on its opening day. As a comparison, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 earned over $14 million on its first day.

China has become an incredibly important market for big franchises nowadays, and in some cases can be make or break for a movie. With Forbes estimating Power Rangers to only make $10 million in total from its Chinese run (making a $145 million worldwide gross), it’s not looking good.

For those us who dreamed of the movie franchise bringing us villains like Lord Zedd and Astronema into the mix, we better hope that disc and digital sales are insanely good – or Krispy Kreme decide to pluck up the dough.

At least it’s comforting that no matter how many times the TV show faces cancellation, it always manages to live to fight giant monsters another day.

Elsewhere, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword has also bombed, not just in China but in the US too, while Star-Lord and his fellow Guardians crew are still dominating.
