The Princess Diaries author says a third film “could happen” – and there’s already a script

Don’t get too excited fellow Genovians, but it seems a third Princess Diaries movie is looking rather likely.

The prospect of a Princess Diaries 3 first came about last year when the movie’s director Garry Marshall passed away and original cast member Julie Andrews told Buzzfeed that Anne Hathaway already “had an idea” for a third instalment.

Andrews also confirmed that she and Hathaway would both be up for reprising their respective roles of Clarisse Renaldi and Mia Thermopolis in tribute to the late director…

… and now, Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot has revealed that a script already exists.

Cabot told EW: “[It] could happen, as we say.”

“I am not allowed to say,” she added. “I would love to sit and talk about [it], but I can’t. I’m not allowed.

“But it’s really more following the movie than the books, so if she — the last version I read, she definitely did not find out that she has a biracial younger sister… which I personally would’ve thought was hilarious, but that was not the direction they were going.”

The Princess Diaries first hit screens in 2001 and its sequel (2004’s Royal Engagement) saw Hathaway and Andrews returning, alongside new cast members Chris Pine and Raven Symone.

Of course, we’re hoping all these cast members (including the delightful Heather Matarazzo as Lily) come back for the threequel, especially since Mia (Hathaway) and Nicholas (Pine) were totally an item by the end of the second movie.

Meanwhile, Sony producer Amy Pascal recently revealed that Anne Hathaway is in talks to play Barbie after original actress Amy Schumer pulled out of the role due to scheduling conflicts.
