Move over Atomic Blonde, there’s a new female badass on the scene – and her name is Mary.
Casting aside her roles as a music mogul in Empire and a brilliant mathematician in the Oscar-nominated Hidden Figures, Taraji P Henson’s latest part sees her go full badass in the role of hit-woman Mary.
In the film’s first trailer, Proud Mary makes sure to tick all the assassin-themed thriller film boxes, delivering quick-cut action sequences and explosions as well as slow-motion bullet shots followed by the central character taking out a few of her targets.
And yes, it all plays out to the tune of Tina Turner’s iconic ‘Proud Mary’ cover.
Proud Mary features Henson as hit-woman Mary as she works for an organised crime family in Boston, only for her life to be completely turned around when she meets a young boy whose path she crosses when a professional hit goes bad and it sparks her maternal instinct.
While it may not be the superhero role Henson said she wanted to try her hand at earlier this year, going by the first trailer alone this film is certainly shaping up to be one of the most kick-ass characters Henson has played yet.
And we’re including her role as Empire‘s Cookie Lyon in that.
The film, which also stars Danny Glover, Neal McDonough and Billy Brown, is directed by London Has Fallen‘s Babak Najafi and will be released in US cinemas on January 12, 2018, with UK cinemas getting the film on February 2, 2018.
