We already know Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman is going to be dealing with the villainous Black Manta, Ocean Master and King Nereus in his first full feature, but if the latest rumours are to be believed, the wet-haired hero will also be battling scary sea monsters, because this film is being directed by James Wan and that man knows horror.
As you can probably tell from the pictures above and below, The Trench are a gang of ghoulish ocean-beasts who are basically much scarier than finding two sharks in your bath.
Aquaman first met The Trench in the 2011 New 52 reboot, and they’re humanoid nightmares with large heads, giant teeth and fins.
A “source” didn’t specifically name the villains when speaking to Superhero News (see below), but they did say we’d be seeing “creatures… [that are] bipedal, humanoid, having arms and legs, but having fins, having big heads with big old eyes and very long, very sharp teeth”. So it’s not a huge leap of logic to The Trench.
Rumoured to be coming to the big screen via a mix of practical effects and CGI, The Trench would add the kind of terror Wan’s known for (he was the man behind Insidious and Saw, after all) into next year’s DC blockbuster.
Adding some credence to the rumour, The Trench were actually created by DC Expanded Universe overlord Geoff Johns, so we wouldn’t be surprised if he was keen on letting Wan add the imaginative monstrosities to the DCEU.
You can hear more about them in the opening four minutes of this video, which is where the rumours started:
Aquaman will hit cinemas December 18, 2018. Jason Momoa will also appear as Aquaman in Justice League, out November 17, 2017.
