Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder tease a crossover episode

A crossover between How to Get Away with Murder and fellow Thank God Its Thursday drama hit Scandal has always seemed impossible, but maybe not anymore!

Continuity be damned because Scandal‘s Kerry Washington and How to Get Away with Murder‘s Viola Davis have both shared photos from each other sets on Wednesday (January 3) — in costume as political fixer Olivia Pope and criminal law professor Annalise Keating respectively.

ABC isn’t yet confirming or denying that fans will be getting an actual crossover episode later in the year yet, likely holding off any formal announcement until its presentation at the TCA press tour next week.

As mentioned, a crossover always seemed unlikely because both shows featured actress Liza Weil in key roles at various times. Liza played Scandal‘s pivotal White House intern Amanda Tanner early on, whereas she’s currently Annalise’s fellow attorney Bonnie Winterbottom in HTGAWM.

How to Get Away with Murder creator Peter Nowalk previously cited this continuity nightmare as reason enough never to bridge the two shows.

“I’ll never say never because you can’t, but I never think there will be a crossover,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2014. “For example, Scandal alum Amanda Tanner is in our show. I pointed her out as an example as a character mystery.

“They all are, though. Everyone will be wearing a mask and will take it off slowly but surely.”

Apparently, the writers have spent the last three years coming up with a way to unite the ShondaVerse after all!

Any crossover would come during Scandal‘s swansong. Last May, ABC president Channing Dungey confirmed the legal drama would be ending with its seventh season.

“I had conversions with Shonda Rhimes where she has had for a while a sense of how she wanted the story to end,” Dungey told reporters at the spring Upfronts.

“She said, ‘Look, I really feel like season seven is where I want to wrap up this story, because I always prefer to end a show where you’re feeling on top as opposed to letting things fizzle out’.”

Scandal and How To Get Away with Murder will both return to ABC, along with Grey’s Anatomy, in the US on Thursday, January 18.
