Sharon Horgan is bringing new sitcom Women on the Verge to TV with a Marvel actress in the lead

The very busy Sharon Horgan is making time to adapt Lorna Martin’s deeply confessional book Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown into a W series.

The Catastrophe star is working with Martin on a six-part adaptation of the book about three women whose lives are spiralling out of control precisely as all of their friends are beginning to settle down.

Kerry Condon, who voices Tony Stark’s automatic intelligence F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will star as Laura, an investigative journalist who risks ruining her career by having an affair with her boss.

Laura is convinced to go into intensive therapy with the enigmatic Dr F (Horgan) by her friend (W1A‘s Nina Sosanya), a single mum grappling with her own desire to try IVF.

Completing this trio of friends is Alison (Catastrophe‘s Eileen Walsh), who returns to an unhappy relationship with her ex-partner to pursue her own fertility journey.

“We were huge fans of Lorna’s book Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown that told her personal story so compellingly and honestly,” Horgan and producing partner Clelia Mountford said. “We are very happy that we’re finally getting to bring her story to the screen and destroy whatever privacy she has left.”

Author Lorna Martin added: “I feel incredibly lucky to be working with such outstandingly talented people to bring these stories to life. The show is a love letter to women who haven’t ticked all the boxes and whose lives are a bit messier and more complicated than they ever thought they’d be.”

Women on the Verge will be a joint production of W, its parent company UK TV and RTÉ in Ireland.
