Skittles is very sorry for ruining Mother’s Day with its disturbing new advert

Note to Skittles: Mixing Mother’s Day and umbilical cords is probably not a great way to advertise your candy.

You’d think that’s not a lesson Big Candy would ever need to learn, but it is weird out there these days. Skittles has been forced to drop an advert that features a mum and son way too close for comfort. Luckily, someone preserved this cultural touchstone on YouTube so that we can all bask in its sheer oddness:

Yes, that really was a mum passing skittles through her body into an umbilical cord connected to her grown son. (Not just any mum though, it’s Napoleon Dynamite’s grandma Sandy Martin!)

If you’re anything like us, you’re trying desperately not to vomit a little in your mouth right now. We’re not alone — judging by these disgusted reactions from social media:

Adweek turned to Skittles’ corporate overlord Wrigley Company for an explanation as to why this ad was ever actually commissioned by a giant candy company.

“We made this video for every mum who likes gross jokes, and we’re taking it down for every mum who doesn’t. Happy Mother’s Day,” Wrigley’s Matt Montei explained. Now we’re even more confused…

This isn’t actually the first controversial Skittles advert. If you’re a brave soul, you can watch some of these other bizarre ads below:

Still, these Skittles commercials still make more sense than Kendall Jenner’s tone-deaf Pepsi campaign.
