Solo: A Star Wars Story's ending explained

Warning: This article contains all the spoilers for the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story is at its heart a heist movie, the story of a group of ragtag career criminals trying to make the ultimate score.

So as you would expect in such a movie, the end gets pretty complicated and confusing. But fear not! We’re here to clear things up.

After Han and his crew manage to get the coaxium safely to the refinery, they are ambushed by Enfys Nest and her gang. It turns out that they aren’t criminals but freedom fighters battling against the Crimson Dawn syndicate. Rebels, if you will – hinting that they will form part of the early Rebel Alliance. Han (Alden Ehrenreich), Chewbacca and Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke) agree to help them steal the fuel from Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany).

What follows is the typical triple-cross. Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) pretended to split, but he was really working with Vos and revealed Han’s plan to trick him with fake coaxium. But Han had learned from Beckett’s warning not to trust anyone, so had tricked his former mentor in turn. The coaxium is real, and Nest’s gang has ambushed Vos’ security forces, soundly defeating them.

Beckett betrays Vos and takes the coaxium and Chewbacca at gunpoint, leaving Han, Qi’ra and Vos to work out their considerable differences.

Qi’ra pretends to betray Han, but kills Vos instead. She promises to catch up with Han, who heads out and kills Beckett in a final showdown – just as he was saying that Han would never have the guts to pull the trigger.

But the double-crossing (quintuple-crossing by now, surely?) isn’t over – Qi’ra makes contact with Dryden’s secret boss and the head of Crimson Dawn – Darth Maul (dun dun dunnn). Instead of joining Han she abandons him, taking Vos’ ship and flying off for a catch-up with her new master.

The film’s epilogue shows Han preventing Lando from cheating at sabacc again (averting a final sort of betrayal), and that’s where we leave our hero.

So Han and Qi’ra betrayed Vos, Beckett betrayed Han and Qi’ra, Han and Qi’ra betrayed Beckett and Vos, Beckett betrayed Vos, and then Qi’ra betrayed everyone. We’re calling it Betrayal Fest 2018. Surely a Solo sequel must be in order to set this all straight…
