The Accountant‘s Gavin O’Connor has been recruited to lead DC’s worst of the worst for Suicide Squad 2.
O’Connor signed on to reunite Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto for the follow-up to 2016’s critically maligned box office smash, according to Deadline. He’ll also script the movie with his writing partner Anthony Tambakis.
The New York filmmaker previously worked with the DCEU’s Ben Affleck on mob drama The Accountant, and recently entered talks for a sequel to that film.

He will replace original Suicide Squad director David Ayer, who moved away from the sequel to work on a Gotham City Sirens movie with Margot Robbie for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.
In landing the Suicide Squad 2 director’s job, O’Connor wrapped up a gig that was previously being eyed for Mel Gibson and The Shallows‘ Jaume Collet-Serra at various times this summer.
The Suicide Squad sequel is one of several DCEU projects that is being spun off from the original movie. Aside from Gotham City Sirens, there’s also a Deadshot film and a Harley Quinn/Joker project in the works.
(Not to mention that completely unconnected Joker origin story that may be produced by Martin Scorsese and theoretically even star Leonardo DiCaprio as the Clown Prince of Crime.)
There was recently talk that Suicide Squad 2 could be delayed due to Will Smith’s commitment to Disney’s live action version of Aladdin (in which he’s playing Genie), but that remains to be seen.
