Suspiria 2 cast, plot, release date and everything you need to know

Warning: Contains spoilers for Suspiria.

Suspiria divided critics following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, but that doesn’t mean a sequel won’t cast its spell over us in the future. Dario Argento’s original horrorfest from 1977 was the first chapter of a trilogy and director Luca Guadagnino has already discussed how his reimagining could also grow into a franchise too.

Speaking to Deadline, the Call Me By Your Name director discussed a short post-credits scene that he included at the end of Suspiria which hints at a future sequel. The moment in question depicts star Dakota Johnson looking forward towards something, but what could that something be?

Suspiria 2 release date: When can we see it?

Director Luca Guadagnino has explicitly discussed the possibility of filming a Suspiria sequel more than once in interviews, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet. Assuming that the first movie performs well at the box office, then an early gaze into our crystal ball suggests that Suspiria 2 won’t spirit its way into cinemas until at least 2020 at the very earliest.

However, Guadagnino’s take on Suspiria eschews conventional horror tropes for the most part and if audiences don’t embrace its arthouse leanings, then the chances of seeing a sequel will fly off into the night like the witches of old. Oh, and Guadagnino also has another sequel to take care of first, Call Me By Your Name 2.

Suspiria 2 cast: Will Tilda Swinton return?

Tilda Swinton’s character dies at the end of Suspiria, but that doesn’t mean she won’t return for a sequel. While discussing Suspiria 2 with Deadline, Guadagnino mentioned that he would love “to explore the origin of Madame Blanc and Helena Marcus”. As he likes to “plot adventures with Tilda on a daily basis”, it’s not hard to see how her character could return in flashbacks which explore the history of the coven in more detail.

Alongside Swinton, the biggest draw of Suspiria is Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson and it’s impossible to imagine a sequel without her. Fortunately, Guadagnino is also keen to explore “the future of Suzy Bannion in the world”, and the post credits scene already hints as much. Let’s just hope Johnson is ready to return after she once described her time on set as a “traumatizing experience”.

Suspiria 2 plot: How could the original trilogy inspire a sequel?

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Guadagnino admits that his remake “left out” many aspects of the original mythology behind Suspiria, which could in turn provide inspiration for a sequel.

The Three Mothers who form the backbone of Argento’s trilogy are mentioned in the new film, but a sequel could dive even deeper into the story behind these three witches and their seats of power. By exploring the origins of Madame Blanc and Helena Marcus, audiences would also learn more about the witches responsible for the evil we encounter in the first place while also looking forward to how Johnson’s character might eventually replace them all.

Suspiria 2 soundtrack: Who will compose the music?

The disturbing, oppressive atmosphere of Suspiria is reinforced throughout by the film’s score, which was recorded by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. His work defines the remake in many ways, so it would make perfect sense if Guadagnino recruited him again to score a follow-up movie with the same kind of hypnotic sounds as the first one. This all depends on whether Yorke is willing of course, but critics seem unanimous in their adoration of his work, hinting at awards success in the near future.

Suspiria 2 trailer: When will we see it?

Without the magical powers of Madame Blanc at our disposal, it’s impossible for us to reach forward in time and find a trailer for something that hasn’t even started filming yet, but in the meantime, enjoy this eerie promo for the first Suspiria movie instead.
