Thor’s Jeff Goldblum was almost in a different MCU movie

Thor: Ragnarok sees the introduction of the likes of Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but one new star could have played a completely different character years and years ago.

Jeff Goldblum – who plays the Grandmaster in the Thor sequel – was actually lined up for a part in Captain America: The First Avenger, which came out in 2011.

When asked if there was any star he’d wanted to snag for the MCU but hadn’t been able to, Kevin Feige revealed to Uproxx that he’s always been a fan of Goldblum and tried to get him for Chris Evans’ debut outing as Captain America.

“Well, if you’d asked me that a year ago, I would have had a very specific answer,” he said. “And now, it happened and he’s in this movie. And it’s Jeff Goldblum.

“And we had come close.

“I mean, I’ll tell you, I think we spoke to him or offered him a role in Captain America: The First Avenger – I think the role of the senator that was part of that USO tour in the first Captain America film.

“And he either wasn’t available or wasn’t interested or whatever.”

Feige added he is grateful that Goldblum never featured in Captain America, because he’s perfect in Thor: Ragnarok.

“Thank goodness,” he said. “That would have just been a small thing, and instead we got to wait for the Grandmaster, which is about as amazing as a Jeff Goldblum ‘Goldblum-iness’ could be.”

Thor: Ragnarok will hit UK cinemas on Tuesday, October 24, with a US release to follow on November 3.
