It seems almost too neat to be true – a show about time travel is cancelled and then, a few days later, the network reverses its decision and renews it after all.
But that’s the way it’s gone with NBC’s Timeless, after it’s been picked up for a second season just a few days after NBC revealed that it hadn’t made the cut for 2018 renewals.
The show, which centres around characters played by Abigail Spencer and Matt Lanter and their time-travelling adventures, aired in the coveted spot previously held by The Voice in the US and gained itself a number of fans – including Ghostbusters’ Leslie Jones and Star Trek‘s William Shatner – but it was cut after just one season earlier this week.
Luckily, thanks in part to the big fan reaction when news of the cancellation broke, some sort of time-travel magic may have gone down as NBC bosses have now revealed that the show will be renewed after all.
And showrunner Eric Kripke tweeted the news for all to see.
“The #TimeTeam went back 3 days, and changed history. @nbc picked us up for 10 episodes,” he wrote. “Seriously. Airs next summer.
“So huge thanks to @nbc for supporting us. And THANKS for the fan support. It’s a MAJOR reason we’re back. It worked, guys! #TimelessRenewed.”
Kripke later clarified that the series may not actually be returning in the summer exactly, but rather some time in 2018. But the main thing is a second season is definitely coming.
And the cast couldn’t be happier about the change of heart, which star Abigail Spencer credited to the fans speaking out about their love of the show.
Co-star Matt Lanter took it a step further and filmed a kooky video where he appeared to have just got back from some stressful time travel, saying: “The mission was successful.”
The new episodes of Timeless will air next year on NBC. E4 airs the show in the UK.
