ABBA fans came close to hearing Tom Hanks belting out ‘Our Last Summer’ in Mamma Mia with Meryl Streep, but the dream scenario ultimately slipped through their fingers.
Tom and his wife Rita Wilson famously produced the hit ABBA movie musical, which is now gearing up for the release of half-prequel, half-sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again later in the year.
But, it turns out that his fellow producers wouldn’t take a chance on Tom all those years ago, so he was benched while Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård got to do all the singing instead.
On The Graham Norton Show on Friday night (January 12), Tom admitted he was heartbroken to lose a Mamma Mia role: “I was a producer of Mamma Mia and I tried out for a role.
“I wanted to hire myself, but my singing voice would have scared the children. So, this is the first time I’ve got to appear with her [in The Post].”
Could Tom’s singing really be much worse than Pierce Brosnan’s? Re-live this infamous moment from the movie and decide for yourself:
Maybe Tom can talk his way into a cameo alongside Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters and Cher (yes, really!) in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which opens in cinemas in the US on July 20 and on July 27 in the UK.
The Graham Norton Show continues next Friday (January 19) with guests Dame Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Jamie Dornan and Sigrid, airing at 10.35pm on BBC One.
