Top Gun star Kelly McGillis spotted walking near her home as sequel starts filming 32 years after the original

Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the iconic 80s movie – but his character's old love interest Kelly will not star in Top Gun 2.

The 60-year-old, who played Charlie Blackwood, had previously said that she would like to cameo when asked in a 2014 interview.

But our exclusive pictures today show Kelly has not flown out with the other cast members who have started filming Top Gun at a military base in San Diego, California.

Instead she spent her Sunday volunteering at a morning service at the First Congregational Church, near her rural home in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Unlike her former co-star Tom Cruise, Kelly stepped out of the limelight years ago.

She ended up running a bar in Key West, Florida, as well as working with drug addicts and alcoholics. She even taught aspiring actors following her success in Top Gun.

The film's sequel will be set in the modern day as the pilots contend with drone warfare and fighter jets.

It's going to be a reverse of the original with Maverick returning as an instructor who struggles to work with a cocky female pilot called Penny Benjamin.

The film will also feature the grown up son of Goose (Riot FKA Wrigley) who is set to clash with Maverick.

Speaking to Access Hollywood about the project in 2017, Tom said: “Aviators are back, the need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines."

He added: “It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one…but a progression for Maverick."
