The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus sets the record straight about Daryl 'betraying' Rick

Warning: The following article contains The Walking Dead season eight spoilers as well as potential spoilers for season nine.

The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus is setting the record straight about whether his character Daryl Dixon will truly become enemies with Rick Grimes next season.

Last weekend’s season eight finale left many fans uneasy, thanks to a closing season where Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Daryl (Reedus) and Jesus (Tom Payne) gathered in secret to plot a response to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) sparing Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) life at the end of All Out War.

The waters were muddied further when Walking Dead overlord Scott Gimple was questioned about whether Maggie and her allies would be the villains of season nine, and he answered: “It looks like that to me.”

However, Norman Reedus has since spoken out on Twitter to caution fans that the battle lines might not be as clearly defined as Gimple made them out to be in his recent interview.

“No, I’m not turning on Brother Rick,” he tweeted, adding: “Everyone chill.”

If Daryl, Maggie and Jesus aren’t the villains next year, then who will be targeting Rick and his allies next year? Fans think they’ve spotted a clue from Sunday’s finale that the sadistic gang known as the Whisperers from the comics have finally arrived on-screen.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX and NOW TV in the UK. The ninth season is expected to premiere in the autumn.
