While we might like to see happy-go-lucky folks smiling and having a gay ol’ time on our telly boxes, who doesn’t love it when our favourite stars have an almighty onscreen tantrum?
These days, everyone is kicking off. If it’s not Piers Morgan putting the world to rights at the crack of dawn, it’s Jeremy Kyle’s guests screaming blue murder at each other. But even on more sedate shows like The X Factor and America’s Next Top Model we have witnessed our fair share of people kicking off when they’re not happy.
Here is a list of our favourite TV tantrums ever – enjoy!
1. Megan McKenna, Celebrity Big Brother
The winter 2016 series of CBB was definitely a classic, thanks to the infamous “David’s dead!” mix up, Gemma Collins’ multiple walk-outs and the doomed Steph and Jeremy liaison. But let’s not forget the ever-so fiery Ex On The Beach star Megan, who most definitely made her mark on the series by kicking-off on more than one occasion during her turbulent stay.
No sooner had she arrived in the house and our Megs was flipping out. First off she laid into Steph Davis after a pricey tracksuit top she’d let her borrow got wet by the pool. “No-one’s respecting me!” she screeched. “I’m sick of it!” Then she let rip at ex-EastEnders star John Partridge and US reality queen Tiffany Pollard in an ear-piercing rant before being restrained and bundled off to the diary room to calm down.
But there, her fury only intensified. “Bullshit!” she raged, as she launched a verbal attack at BB about “liar” John Partridge. When BB tried to calm her down and refused to let Megan return to the house, she stomped straight up to the camera and started screeching at the top of her voice, veins bulging on her neck, before beating on the door screaming: “Get me out!”
Even when security rushed in and restrained her, she seemed unfazed and carried on ranting, turning her attention to Tiffany again and calling her a “ghetto c**t”. What a classy lady!
2. Nikki Grahame, Big Brother
Even though she has some stiff competition from Megan, Nikki is by far the funniest tantrum-thrower of the lot. During her tumultuous spell in the BB house in 2006, she was screaming the place down like a banshee every five minutes.
If she wasn’t kicking off at her “two faced” housemates or people who were sleeping in her bed (“That’s my bed. That’s Nikki’s bed!”), she was moaning mostly about the air con and feeling chilly (“I’m so colllllllld!”).
What made her so funny – aside from screaming the house down and providing the nation with a series of HILARIOUS catchphrases (“Who is she? Where did you find her?”) – was that she’d get so overwrought that she would occasionally make like a crab and bend acrobatically over backwards in anger.
Subsequent housemates have tried to emulate the BB star’s wild and tantrum-tastic kookiness but none have ever quite matched her quick-witted brilliance.
3. George Gerasimou, The X Factor
As one third of totally rubbish band Triple Trouble in the 2009 series of The X Factor, George G made dubious headlines after a particularly vile verbal attack on a critical Simon Cowell.
Two years later he decided to try his luck again as a solo act and assured Dermot that he had learned a lot over the past two years. But no sooner had he kicked off an appalling version of a track called ‘Give Everything’, it was clear that things hadn’t changed.
Once the music was cut short by the judges and the audience started chanting “Off! Off! Off!”, George was rolling his eyes and pulling faces like a petulant kid.
But things got worse. When the judges told him they thought he had a bad vibe and zero talent, he turned on them and branded Tulisa a “scumbag” who was trying to replace Cheryl and branded her “a silly bitch”. As security led him off stage to rapturous applause from the baying crowd, George gave the judges the finger and continued to kick off backstage, striding up to a bank of screens and pointing at Tulisa, sniping: “No dogs allowed. I thought there were no dogs on The X Factor.“
An angry Dermot scalded him for his nasty chat and sent him on his way back to total obscurity.
4. Gordon Ramsay, Hell’s Kitchen
We all know that the wrinkly Hell’s Kitchen chef is a bit of a hothead. But in an episode from the fifth US series, the Beckhams’ best mate really lost his rag when one of his students dared to take him on after he’d criticised him for producing substandard dishes.
In a typical outburst, Gordon exploded and referred to the wannabe cook as “dick face”. But mild-mannered put-upon Giovanni wasn’t having it and defended himself.
Furious that he was being challenged by one of his students, Gordon stormed across the steamy kitchen, squared up to a rattled Giovanni and screamed in his face that he was a “donkey” and a “dickface”, adding that he was ashamed of him.
After a lot more effing and blinding, Gordon told the shaken chef to get his jacket and “f**k off”.
5. Teresa Giudice, Real Housewives Of New Jersey
We all know that the Real Housewives of any city are prone to the odd tantrum or ten, but few have compared to the mighty whirlwind of anger that came from Teresa Giudice.
In one episode of the show, Caroline Manzo was busy taking Danielle Staub to task over a book that had been written about her by her ex-husband. While the table was at war, hard-faced Teresa, who was hosting the dinner party, sat peacefully at the table. But then… BOOM!
Teresa went all nuclear on Danielle’s butt and started listing all the problems she had with her, including her being arrested, stripping, being a “prostitution whore” and having been engaged 19 times. Her fury became so intense that the glamorous wildcat flipped the table with all the food and drinks on and had to be restrained by her fellow guests.
6. Gemma Collins, Celebrity Big Brother
As we know from her larger-than- life appearances on TOWIE, Queen Collins is no shrinking violet – and pity the fools who get caught up in one of her rages. But it was during her time in the CBB house when viewers saw Gemma throw so many toys out of the pram that her housemates could’ve opened up their own branch of Toys”R”Us.
You name it, she ranted about it. With only straighteners available in the house to smooth out her mammoth extensions, Gem boomed: “This is very expensive hair and it’s f**king frazzled because you’ve only got straighteners in here. You’re taking the piss out of me. Why couldn’t you put heated rollers in here. Straighteners are what f**king weirdos use on their hair!”
When she thought she had seen a ghost in the bedroom, she ranted: “I’ve just seen something f**king scary in the mirror. Oh my God, open that f**king door now. F**k this, I’m out of here. Get that fire exit door, I’m off!”
Even when viewers voted for her to sit in a cage as part of a task, ‘Hurricane Gemma’ refused and kicked off in only the way she knew how. “These producers are f**king idiots”, she bellowed. “I don’t need the money. Do you think these c**ts are going to pay my mortgage? I’ve got money. They don’t get it. I’m claustrophobic.”
7. More Megan McKenna, Ex on the Beach
This megamouth is so fiery that we reckon she deserves another spot on the list. During her time on Ex On The Beach, the reality veteran proved to be one of the angriest women ever to appear on the box. When Connie, one of her villa mates, kissed her potential boyfriend Jordan on an island date, she didn’t hesitate in letting her know she wasn’t happy and yelled in her face: “You’re a twisted bitch!”
Later, things got more aggressive when Megs almost walloped her love rival, screaming into Connie’s face at the top of her voice: “I’m going to f**king punch you in your f**king face!”
But that was just the tip of the iceberg as Megan squared up to practically everyone in the villa at some point in both of her series of EOTB – to the point of losing her voice.
Give the gal a lozenge!
8. Zoe Alexander, The X Factor
When Zoe bounced out on stage with a toothy smile etched across her face, the judges thought they had found a star in the making about to tantalise their lugholes.
However, her lacklustre rendition of Pink’s ‘So What’ was so “blah” that Gary cut it short and the atmosphere in the arena suddenly became very chilly. Sadly an equally ropey version of Emilie Sande’s ‘Next To Me’ also failed to impress the judges, who were unanimous in giving her a big fat “no”.
Zoe, however, didn’t agree with their verdict and whined at the judges that they had made her do a Pink song and that all she had ever wanted to do was to be herself. When Gary reminded her that she had actually done another song, the feisty singer stormed off stage hurling the mic behind her.
But that wasn’t it. Her furious dad wasn’t having his daughter being criticised so dragged her back out to face the judges where she then launched into a vile tirade that left Nicole totally flabbergasted.
Storming off stage again, a wild Zoe then smashed a camera full on in the lens, pushed over parts of the set backstage and lashed out at another cameraman before being hauled out of the arena!
9. Lydia Bright, TOWIE
These days Lydia Bright is a rather serene fashionista type, but during her TOWIE days, she was prone to the odd tantrum, especially with on-off boyfriend Arg. In one episode, when James Argent took her to task about her not liking his best mate Mark Wright, she went ballistic: “I will accept Mark but I am not going to have you walk in like that and sticking up for Mark. I don’t care anymore. I’m not being with someone like you. I’m ashamed, go away, leave me alone. Truth hurts!”
Of course Essex is the home of catty tantrums, which have seen pretty much all of the cast sound off into someone’s mush, whether it’s Pete Wicks and Megan (again), Tommy and Diags, Lauren Goodger and Sam Faiers or Gemma Collins and the rest of Brentwood.
10. Aja and Farrah Mone, RuPaul’s Drag Race
When Valentina won Miss Congeniality on the Season 9 reunion show and thanked her mom for teaching her to be congenial, the rest of the queens were neither convinced or happy.
“Congenial?” hissed rival queen Aja. “I just don’t feel like you should be Miss Congeniality. You’re clearly not focused on anyone else but you. [You’re a] fan favourite? Great you have a lot of fans who love you. We should call it ‘Fan Favourite’. Miss Congeniality? I don’t see it.”
When Valentina told her fellow queens she had tried to be kind to everyone, her one-time mate Farrah Mone piped up to say her emotional and angry piece. “Valentina, we literally did everything together on the show. We were such close friends and you have literally not spoken to me in almost five months. I really miss my friend and it really hurts my feelings.
“You don’t love me. I was a real friend to you. I would not have just dropped you. I have texted you but you ignore my texts. It feels like you don’t have any desire to speak to me.”
11. Tyra Banks, America’s Next Top Model
When aspiring model Tiffany Richardson didn’t seem too fazed about being eliminated in an episode from season 4 of America’s Next Top Model, an emotional Tyra Banks decided to let her know just how disappointed in her she was.
In an infamous monologue, the normally serene model let rip and launched a scathing attack on the flabbergasted contestant. “Be quiet, Tiffany, be quiet!” she raged. “What is wrong with you? Stop it! I have never in my life yelled at a girl like this. When my mother yells like this it’s because she loves me.
“I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you! How dare you? Learn something from this. When you go to bed at night, you lay there and you take responsibility for yourself, ’cause nobody’s gonna take responsibility for you.
“You rollin’ your eyes and you acting like this because you’ve heard it all before. You’ve heard it all before, you don’t know where the hell I come from, you have no idea what I’ve been through. But I’m not a victim, I grow from it, and I learn. Take responsibility for yourself.”
Time for a sit down.
