A new welcoming text animation for Discover Westworld – the show’s official dedicated website – depicts an “unknown user” putting out what looks like some sort of distress call, before the transmission is cut off: “Is anybody out there? Something’s gone wrong. Can you hear th–.”
The user’s message would seem to be referring to the disturbing climax to the first series, when the cowboy robots of the programme’s theme park went on a rebellion and commenced and attack on the human guests.
In the animation, the cry for help is overridden by a loading screen named “Journey Into Night” by a “registered user” who assures that “all is well” and that “celebrations continue….”, before a screen advertising the fictional Westworld theme park appears.
It’s all decidedly creepy as it sucks you into its deceit – but once we shake off the all-too-real feel to the thing, it’s definitely got us excited for the upcoming season of Westworld.

And that “Journey Into Night” snippet in the Discover Westworld website is significant, as it confirms director Jonathan Nolan’s tease from a few weeks back, when he was talking to fans on Reddit about the show’s second season.
And fans hoping to see a return of Sir Anthony Hopkins in his role as Dr Robert Ford – despite his sacrifice at the end of the first season – can take heart from some comments from Nolan made recently too.
“I think the sacrifice he makes at the end of the first season is very real,” he said.
“I think there will be an opportunity to explore a little bit more of the backstory of how this park came to be, a little more of that story.

“We’ll see the character’s presence will be felt in that sense in terms of filling in a few more of the gaps about the early history of this place.”
Even if the character does just come back in some sort of flashback form, we are totally here for it.
Westworld is due to return in 2018.
