Along with the dastardly Mr Gold (Robert Carlyle), the evil queens in this twisted fairytale series put the supreme divas of Dynasty to shame. Within the constructs of the fantasy drama, it's perfectly acceptable for the Machiavellian schemes of these bad girls to play out. Tonight, Victoria (Gabrielle Anwar) tries to bust out of the pen, and the backstory of Lady Tremaine (also Anwar) is revealed.

Middle Eastern appearance has replaced the Russian accent as the distinguishing feature of the baddie in many US crime shows. While Islamic extremism is the concern in this mardi gras-themed episode, there is a refreshingly different storyline, where fear and prejudice are addressed from a personal perspective. There's also a righteous twist of justice at the end that's a nice finish to the typically action-packed drama.

Along with luscious footage of Versailles and details of the long-awaited restoration of Marie Antoinette's hamlet, where the ill-fated queen liked to play at being a peasant, is an intriguing take on the woman's life and motivation for her indulgences. What emerges is a familiar tale of a female scapegoat for the wrongdoings of men. Lavish dramatisations well serve this interpretation.
