The uncanny and astonishing adventures of Marvel’s X-Men spin-off The Gifted will continue next year.
Just 11 episodes into its first season, The Gifted has been handed an early second season renewal from its US network Fox. The announcement was made at the TCA press tour on Thursday (January 4).
The Gifted premiered last October to generally positive reviews (although many felt it paled in comparison to fellow X-Men spin-off Legion) and modest ratings for Fox.
Unlike Legion, The Gifted is confirmed to take place in the same timeline as the X-Movies, albeit at a future point where both the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants have disbanded.
Ahead of the show’s transmission, the cast chatted to Digital Spy about showrunner Matt Nix using a more grounded approach in centring The Gifted on one family fleeing the mutant-hating government.
“It’s a branch of this franchise, and this mutant mythology, that I don’t think fans have ever experienced before,” Blair Redford (aka John Proudstar / Thunderbird) explained at the time. “It’s going to be a new take, and a perspective on it that the fans are going to really enjoy.”
Co-star Sean Teale promised: “It’s more about ordinary people. They don’t fly in the X-Jet, and they don’t don suits.”
Still, The Gifted does feature several fan-favourite characters from the comics — Emma Dumont’s mistress of magnetism Polaris and Jamie Chung’s teleporting Blink among them.
The Gifted airs on Mondays on Fox in the US and on Sundays on FOX UK.
