A fire tore through a high-rise apartment in Queens on Friday, injuring nine police officers, three firefighters and five civilians.
The flames erupted on the 11th floor of a 13-story building on Shore Front Parkway in Rockaway Beach at around 11:30 a.m., according to Fire Department officials.
High winds complicated the effort and the FDNY attacked flames from the balconies of neighboring apartments.
“If we opened up the door, that fire most likely would have run right through the apartment and right into the hallway and overrun us,” Assistant Chief Edward Baggot said at a press conference.
It took 78 firefighters to finally bring the blaze under control just before 1 p.m., officials said.
