Britain’s worst spot for parking fines has been identified – and the dubious distinction goes to Brighton, which last year issued more tickets than there are cars.

Brighton and Hove wardens dished out 124,069 penalty charge notices (PCNs), which equates to 112 tickets per 100 vehicles registered in the area.

Wardens in London and Edinburgh also appeared to be working overtime in 2017 by issuing PCNs at a rate of 101 per 100 registered cars – 3,167,463 and 200,812 respectively.

The figures were compiled by insurer Admiral from data released by local authorities following Freedom of Information requests. 

The company also examined another peril of parking – the prang, caused either by the driver hitting an obstacle while attempting to park, or being hit by another car while parked.

Based on its own data, Admiral found that nearly one in ten claims for accidents last year related to parking.

And its figures stirred up the age-old debate among couples across Britain about who is better at parking – men or women. 

It found that women drivers claimed for 10.6 per cent of parking-related accidents, while men accounted for 9.1 per cent.
