Cop delivers baby on the job — for the second time

Maybe this Bronx cop should trade in her NYPD blues for doctor’s scrubs — she just helped deliver her second on-the-job holiday baby!

Officer Doris Vega and her NYPD partner, Timothy Canniff, from the 48th Precinct was responding to a call on Clinton Avenue in The Bronx around 3 a.m. Monday. All the cops knew was that there was a woman bleeding and in need of help.

When the officers arrived at the home, they found Maria Sumba, 30, in her bathroom “in the midst of birthing,” said Vega, who has children of her own.

“When we went inside the house, [Sumba’s roommates] were pointing directly over to the bathroom. I saw a baby, [and] I immediately swooped in and went into action,” Vega said.

The 17-year NYPD veteran said the baby’s head was already out, and Sumba was standing, so she helped her guide the baby out the rest of the way so it wouldn’t fall onto the floor.

“[Sumba[ was weak. She would not have held the baby. The baby would have fallen on the floor,” Vega said.

Vega said Sumba lost a lot of blood and was in shock, but the seasoned officer knew exactly what to do.

“A few years back I [helped deliver another kid] on Halloween, and that was in the living room on the floor,” Vega recounted.

“I felt more confident [this time] because I did it before. … It felt exciting, and it was a beautiful experience.”

She joked that she should probably “take off” on holidays moving forward.

Sumba was immediately taken to the hospital after the birth, and Vega said she is relieved to report she’s “fine” and “happy.”

“She’s good. The baby’s nice and healthy,” too, the cop said.
