Doctor could be released on bail after bust on sickening charges

The sick neurosurgeon accused of scheming to impregnate women so he could have sex with their children could get sprung on bail at the end of the month.

Santa Cruz Superior Judge Samuel Stevens will determine how much bail to set for James Kohut during a hearing June 28 after prosecutors failed to convince him that the disturbed doc should be kept locked up.

Kohut is charged, along with two nurses, with luring women so he could get them pregnant and then have sex with their children.

Prosecutors said the sadistic surgeon wanted to fulfill his “fixed sexual desire to be part of multiple ‘taboo families’ where the parents raise their children sexually” and that the alleged rapes date as far back as 1997.

Kohut, a licensed brain surgeon, was arrested May 14 at his Santa Cruz home and has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts of child molestation.

At a hearing Monday, Stevens said the doctor was entitled to bail.

Defense attorney Jay Rorty revealed his client is no longer on suicide watch behind bars, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Rorty insisted his client was not considered a suicide risk, explaining that an ominous note he’d left was the result of a “dark night of the soul.”

Also arrested were nurses Rashel Brandon and Emily Stephens who are accused of committing forced sexual acts with three boys younger than 14 – including one who was just 3 years old — and a girl younger than 14 in May 2016, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported.

Kohut is also accused of having sex with a boy and girl younger than 10 between January and May 2016 and committing lewd acts on a boy under 14.

Kohut, who faces up to 165 years in prison if convicted, agreed to surrender his California medical license if bail is set. He would also have no access to the internet or telephones and would be placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring.
