Donald Trump lawyer says he paid porn actress $130,000 out of his own pocket

Donald Trump’s personal lawyer says he paid $130,000 (£95,000) of his own money to a porn actress who claims to have had an affair with the US president.

Attorney Michael Cohen, who worked as counsel to the Trump organisation for more than a decade, told the New York Times he was not reimbursed after making the payment to Stephanie Clifford, who is professionally known as Stormy Daniels .

This is the first time Mr Cohen has acknowledged a role in the payment.

"Neither the Trump Organisation nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly," Mr Cohen said in a statement to the newspaper.

"The payment to Ms Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone."

Mr Cohen also said he had submitted a response to the Federal Election Commission after a complaint was filed by the government watchdog group Common Cause contending the payment represented an "excessive campaign contribution".

"The complaint alleges that I somehow violated campaign finance laws by facilitating an excess, in-kind contribution," his statement continued.

"The allegations in the complaint are factually unsupported and without legal merit, and my counsel has submitted a response to the FEC."

Mr Cohen reportedly refused to answer follow up questions including why he made the payment or whether Trump had been aware of the transaction.

Earlier this year, it was reported Ms Clifford was paid ‘hush money’ in October 2016 not to talk about her alleged relationship with Trump before the 2016 election.

The deal was alleged to have been brokered by Mr Cohen.

Ms Clifford, who has performed in about 150 porn films, including Dirty Deeds, Nymphos and Good Will Humping, an X-rated spoof of the flick Good Will Hunting, has not publicly denied having an affair with the president.

A statement released by Mr Cohen in her name in January denied an affair, but in interviews she has refused to directly answer questions about it.

Last month, Ms Clifford hinted she did accept money after an alleged relationship with Trump.

The porn star appeared on Jimmy Kimmel to discuss the President’s alleged extra-marital affair after it was claimed she was paid to stay quiet.

"Do you have a nondisclosure agreement?" Jimmy asked her directly.

"Do I?" she deflected.

"You can’t say if you have a nondisclosure agreement but if you didn’t have a nondisclosure agreement you most certainly could say: ‘I don’t have a nondisclosure agreement. Yes?’" he reasoned.

"You’re so smart Jimmy," she hinted.

The appearance came shortly after Melania stood by her husband at the State of Union address – following reports the First Lady has been staying in a hotel rather than the White House after Trump’s alleged affair resurfaced.

Hours before Ms Clifford was to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live – the 38-year-old appeared to issue a statement denying the affair on Twitter.

"Over the past few weeks I’ve been asked countless times to comment on reports of an alleged sexual relationship wit Donald Trump many, many, many years ago," she said in a statement.

"The fact of the matter is that each party to this alleged affair denied its existence in 2006, 2011, 2017 and again in 2018.

"I am not denying this affair because I was paid ‘hush money’ as has been reported in overseas-owned tabloids. I am denying this affair because it never happened."

But after Jimmy read the statement out in full – she denied having anything to do with it.

Daniels was allegedly paid off in October 2016 not to go public.

But seedy details have since emerged of the encounter including how the porn star reportedly spanked Trump with a copy of Forbes magazine featuring his picture.

The spanking was revealed in a string of emails obtained in the US.

Andrea Dube, a political consultant based in New Orleans and one of the email recipients, confirmed they are "100 percent" authentic.

In 2009, Daniels was thinking of a run for the Senate in Louisiana and was working with local political consultants about potential donors.

Trump was on her list – and his name was one of the contacts in her phone, one political aide told Democratic consultant Andrea Dubé in an email.

"She says one time he made her sit with him for three hours watching Shark Week. Another time he had her spank him with a Forbes magazine," the consultant wrote to Dubé.

The consultant revealed Daniels had told him the bizarre spanking session occurred while they were involved in a sexual relationship that began soon after they met during a golf tournament in July 2006.

The magazine that Trump asked Daniels to spank him with had his face on the cover, the consultant added.

An Autumn 2006 cover of Forbes features a photo of Trump flanked by his daughter, Ivanka, and his son, Donald Jr.

The president has repeatedly said all of the more than a dozen women who have accused him of sexual misconduct or assault are liars.
