President Trump is being taken to task, not over a controversial policy, or even a haunting tweet, but for a signed letter riddled with grammatical errors. Retired English teacher, Yvonne Mason, received a note from the White House, felt her editing instincts kick in, and swiftly reached for her purple correcting pen. After 17 years teaching, she had seen plenty of errors, but nothing quite like this before.
“I have never, ever, received a letter with this many silly mistakes,” Mason told The Greenville News.
She combed through the letter, adding comments like “OMG this is wrong!” and “Have you tried grammar and style check?” If this note had come through one of her classrooms, it would’ve barely earned a passing grade.
“If it had been written in middle school, I’d give it a C or C-plus,” Mason said. “If it had been written in high school, I’d give it a D.”
Mason originally wrote to the president about February’s Parkland high school shooting. The response she received bore Trump’s signature and while Mason acknowledged the letter was likely written by a staffer and not the president, she still found the errors unacceptable.
“When you get letters from the highest level of government, you expect them to be at least mechanically correct,” Mason said. She plans on returning the letter to the White House, with all her edits included.
