Falling chunks of concrete are destroying cars driving under this bridge

Concrete chunks are raining down from the demolition of the Bayonne Bridge — striking windshields and roofs of cars below.

The softball-sized debris crashed into four cars on Monday morning and leaving them totaled. Vaughn Bellocchio, owner of the Polishing Pad auto body shop, said it was just the latest in a string of incidents since Port Authority began the work four years ago.

“We’re constantly getting barraged with rocks and dust and debris,” said Bellocchio. “It’s impossible for them to demolish a bridge without things falling down. They are working up there with jackhammers, but they won’t protect the neighborhood.”

The problem has gotten so bad that Bellocchio, who works on high end cars, has filed dozens of claims with the Port Authority totaling about $250,000, he said.

“If one of these chunks hits somebody, they are going to be dead,” he said. “Not hurt, but dead with decapitations and arms coming off.”

Port Authority officials confirmed the incident and they said they are looking into it.

“We are currently undertaking a full evaluation of today’s incident with our contractor to learn exactly what happened and to determine a proper course of action moving forward,” said spokesman Steve Coleman.

The Port Authority is reconstructing the Bayonne Bridge to raise the roadbed and allow room for more traffic and allow bigger boats to pass underneath.
