Former church music director busted for child porn

A former music director at a church in Missouri has been indicted by a federal jury for child porn, just weeks after he was fired because of an active investigation.

Craig A. Wieneke, 31, of Springfield, allegedly received and distributed child pornography over the internet between November 2016 and April, the Department of Justice said in a statement.

Wieneke, who remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing, was the music director at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield during the alleged crime.

Wayne Barron, the church’s executive director, told the Springfield News-Leader that church officials fired Wieneke on April 2 after learning of the investigation. Wieneke, an employee at the church since 2013, did not work with children as part of his job, Barron said.

“We have fully cooperated with law enforcement and have been relieved to know that no alleged wrongdoing has involved any church members or church property,” Barron said. “We are continuing to pray for all parties involved.”

It’s unclear whether Wieneke has hired an attorney. The church’s website did not contain a listing for him on a staff page as of Tuesday.
