Huge blast rocks Cairo airport ‘as fuel tanks catch fire and explode’

  • Two storage tanks owned by petrochemical company said to have caught fire
  • Large plume of smoke and fireball seen rising above Cairo International Airport
  • Explosion was ‘outside airport perimeter’; all flights are suspended 

A huge explosion has reportedly been heard in the vicinity of Cairo Airport this evening.

The blast is believed to have been the result of two fuel storage tanks, owned by a petrochemical company, catching fire and exploding outside the airport perimeter. 

Images on Twitter show a large plume of smoke rising from an area of Cairo International Airport.

Some commenters on social media suggested that it was a plane which had set on fire and then exploded.

All flights have been suspended at the airport while officials investigate the blast.
