An inmate was killed when another prisoner blindsided him and choked him inside a facility on Rikers Island Monday, sources said.
Artemio Rosa, 27, came up from behind the victim while he was sitting down in the Anna M. Kross Center and began to choke him, according to sources.
Corrections officers pried Rosa from the 35-year-old victim and called 911 — but the man collapsed and died before EMTs could revive him.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the violence, the first of its kind on Rikers since 2008.
“This loss of life is a tragedy, and serious violence of this nature is incredibly troubling,” de Blasio spokesperson Natalie Grybauskas said in a statement.
“An investigation is underway and we will do everything we can to get to the bottom of this heinous crime.”
Rosa had been in Rikers due to arrests on felony charges of assault and criminal mischief, records show.
The attack did not appear to be gang-related.
