He also posted a photo of a man strolling along the street next to a picture of a woman putting on a handbag.

The 52-year-old said: “GG stepped in with the team @TheClachan to stop these two thieves robbing tourists!! – doing my civic bit!”

Cops confirmed they were called to the pub yesterday but no arrests were made.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “Police received a third party report at approximately 13:50hrs on Sunday, 16 July of an attempted bag theft at a pub in Kingly Street, W1.

“Two people – a man and a woman – attempted to steal the bag; they were challenged before making off.

“The details of the victim were not provided.

“Local officers will liaise with staff at the venue with a view to progressing this investigation.”

Millionaire businessman Gary has courted controversy in the past for his wild antics, which led to him being known as a “black sheep” uncle.

He was filmed a number of years ago appearing to cut up cocaine and bragging about William and Kate at his Ibiza party villa Maison de Bang Bang.

In May, The Sun revealed how Gary had apparently pestered a mum and her 17-year-old daughter for a threesome.

He was said have told the disgusted pair: “It’s always been a fantasy of mine.”

The dad also reportedly told the 17-year-old: “I bet you like your nipples being tied up” while she was on the family holiday in the Algarve.

He had been pictured just a fortnight before with daughter Tallulah, 14, as they attended Pippa’s Berkshire wedding last Saturday alongside Kate, 35, hubby Prince William, 34, and other royals.

A spokesman for pub chain Mitchells & Butlers said: “Unfortunately handbag theft is an issue in many London pubs.

“Our team do everything they can to reduce the problem and make our guests aware.

“We’re really grateful to Mr Goldsmith for being so vigilant.”
