Police in West Virginia were left scratching their head after finding the boys in the car and were only able to reunite them with them with their mum an hour later.
They believe the boys could have been trying to drive towards their grandfather’s farm.
Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese said: “They were heading in the right direction.
No charges have yet been pressed against the boys’ mother.
But her landlord has said she is no longer welcome to live at the home where the car was originally left.
Sharlene Wiseman said: “We didn’t want to take that chance that something might happen again.”
